A lasting tribute has been unveiled in Barnsley to the comedian Charlie Williams.
Mr. Williams died five years ago, aged 78, but fans have been pressing since then for a tribute to be erected in his memory.
Now a plague has been placed outside the town’s Civic Theatre where Mr. Williams appeared many times.
A number of showbiz veterans, including Norman Collier, Jimmy Cricket and Bernie Clifton gathered for the unveiling.
The plague includes Mr. Williams’ catchphrase “Hey up me old flower!”.
Mr. Williams is remembered as one of Britain’s first black stand-up comedians.
Before becoming an entertainer Mr. Williams had been a well-known Yorkshire sportsman, having played football for Doncaster Rovers.
He was made an M.B.E. in recognition of his work for charity.
Following the unveiling of the plaque Jimmy Cricket paid tribute to Mr. Williams.
He said: “Charlie was a very special person. He was the first black comedian who brought people together.”
