Alf Carretta the lead singer with the oldies pop group The Zimmers has died. He was 93.
Mr. Carretta became front man for the group, which comprised of 40 pensioners, when it was formed in 2007.
They had a chart success with their first single which was a cover version of The Who’s classic My Generation.
The recording took place in the famous EMI studios at Abbey Road and a video to accompany the single has since been viewed several million times on YouTube (see link below). In it Mr. Carretta can be seen leading fellow group members across the famous zebra crossing outside the studios.
The success of the group resulted in Mr. Carretta becoming something of a media celebrity with appearances on TV shows both in the UK and abroad. He appeared on the Jay Leno show in the US alongside actor George Clooney. Afterwards Mr. Carretta kept the gold star from his dressing-room door as a memento.
Before enjoying fame with the group Mr. Carretta was well known in the North London community in which he lived. He had campaigned to prevent the demolition of his favourite bingo club which he regarded as a lifeline for pensioners in the area.
