Leading Ulster evangelist dies

One of Northern Ireland’s best known evangelists, Derick Bingham, has died. He was 64 and had been suffering from cancer.

Mr. Bingham was also a prolific Christian author, having written 25 books, several on C. S. Lewis, and one on St. Patrick.

Before becoming a full-time evangelist and author Mr. Bingham taught Religious Education and English at Lurgan College. He was also Adjunct Professor of English Literature at John Brown University in Arkansas.

Mr. Bingham was Pastor at the Crescent Church in Belfast’s University area.

He also made frequent contributions to BBC programmes and wrote a regular column for the Belfast Telegraph.

He was diagnosed withy cancer just over a year ago. After treatment he entered a period of remission, or as he wrote on his website “permission”.

“I feel these extra days that the Lord has graciously given me”, wrote Mr. Bingham, “are not given for private indulgence but should be used in all lowliness within the will of God to encourage others across the world. If I can by the work of the Holy Spirit inspire by my letters just one person who desperately needs inspiring then this website will have accomplished its purpose”.

He is survived by his wife Margaret and daughters Kathryn, Kerrie and Claire.

A private funeral is to be held, while a Service of Thanksgiving is to take place later in the month. For details please view the Passedaway.com notice for Mr. Bingham.
