Man from Northern Ireland drowns in Australia

A man from Northern Ireland has drowned in Australia.

The victim, who was 27, was swimming in a natural pool in the Kakadu National Park when the tragedy happened.

Local police say the man, who has been named as Tony Norney who was originally from the Colinvale area of Poleglass, was among a group of around 20 backpackers staying in the area. Friends raised the alarm after he failed to surface.

Swimming in the area is said to be dangerous because of the presence of crocodiles, but police say there is no evidence he was attacked.

Officials have pointed to the fact that numerous signs are in place to warn visitors that swimming is dangerous (see photo).

The victim’s body was recovered following a search operation.
