Michael Foot passes away

Former Labour party leader, Michael Foot has died. He was 96.

Mr. Foot had served as an MP for 47 years, having been first elected to Parliament in 1945.

In 1960 he succeeded his friend Aneurin Beven as MP for Ebbw Vale and served the constituency for a further 32 years.

He was regarded as one of the great orators of the Labour movement and became party leader in 1980. His term in office was not a happy one. In the 1983 General Election the party suffered one of its worst defeats.

The left-wing manifesto produced by the party had been labelled as ‘the longest suicide note in history’ by Labour MP Gerald Kaufman.

Mr. Foot was a founding member of the Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament.

Tributes have been led by the Prime Minister. Mr. Brown said the former leader had been a man “who was good, compassionate and dedicated to his country”.
