MS campaigner dies at suicide centre

A prominent campaigner for better rights for people suffering from multiple sclerosis has died at an assisted suicide centre in Switzerland.

John Hicklenton, who was 42, died at the Dignitas centre near Zurich.

He had suffered from MS for ten years.

Mr. Hicklenton was a well-known graphic artist whose work included the character Judge Dredd in the cult comic 2000AD.

As part of his campaigning for MS sufferers, Mr. Hicklenton appeared in the award-winning TV documentary, Here’s Johnny, which charted his battle with the condition.

The MS Trust has paid tribute to him. In a statement the Trust said the fact that John Hickenton “was prepared to use his fame to raise awareness of a condition so often overlooked by the media, and to wage his personal war on MS so publicly is something that is greatly appreciated by people in the MS community”.
