The actor Pete Postlewaite has died. He was 64.
Mr. Postlewaite was one of the country’s best loved actors whose career spanned success in his native Britain and in the United States where he was once described by the director Steven Spielberg as “the best actor in the world”.
His looks could never have been described as those of the ‘matinee idol’, but his performances as a character actor were outstanding.
He starred in the 1981 Play for Today The Muscle Market. Written by Alan Bleasdale the play is regarded as the ‘missing link’ between The Black Stuff and The Boys from the Blackstuff.
He received an Oscar nomination for his portrayal of Giuseppe Conlon in the film The Name of the Father (1993).
His other film successes included The Usual Suspects (1995), Brassed Off (1996) and The Lost World: Jurassic Park (1997).
Mr. Postlewaite, who was made an O.B.E. in 2004, died in hospital in Shropshire.
He had been receiving treatment for cancer over the past number of months but had continued working.
