Mystery grave discovered in Carrickfergus

Mystery surrounds a grave found by two schoolboys on the shore at Carrickfergus.

The boys, aged 10 and 11, discovered a skeleton while fishing for crabs on the shore at Rhanbuoy.

What remained of a wooden coffin was also evident at the scene.

The PSNI sent the remains for forensic examination.

Experts believe the remains are those of a man and could be up to 200 years old.

One theory being considered for the watery grave is that it could have been provided for a person who had been executed. The grave was close to Gallows Green which was the site of public executions in the past.

Those hanged at the scene could not be buried in consecrated ground.
