Plan to exhume remains causes disquiet

Plans which could result in some remains being exhumed at a graveyard near Draperstown have caused disquiet among local people.

It is reported that a number of graves will be affected by the plan which is linked to the development of a new school.

The graveyard is adjoining St. Columba’s Church.

It is understood that the Bishop of Derry, Seamus Hegarty, approved the plan to exhume some remains in order for a footpath to be provided to the new school.

However the plan has resulted in some people in the area expressing their opposition.

It is unclear how many graves will be affected by the plan. Some of the graves are very old and unmarked, but others are clearly marked and belong to people whose relatives live in the local community.

Cemetery Sunday will take place in the graveyard at the beginning of next month and it is understood that some people are planning to use the occasion to make their opposition to the exhumation plans known to church authorities.
