The poet Peter Porter has died aged 81. He had been suffering from cancer.
Mr. Porter was born in Australia in 1929, but came to Britain in 1951 where began working as a bookseller.
His first collection, Once Bitten, Twice Bitten, was published in 1961.
He became a full-time poet, journalist and broadcaster in 1968.
Over the years he continued to publish his work to critical acclaim; his anthology, The Cost of Seriousness (1978) was considered among his best work. He also won a number of prizes including the Whitebread poetry award and Duff Cooper prize.
