Members of the Polish community in Northern Ireland have been signing a book of condolence, which has been opened at Belfast City Hall, for the victims of the air crash which left their country’s President and 95 other people dead.
President Lech Kaczynski and the other victims died when their plane crashed as it attempted to land in thick fog at Smolensk’s airport in Russia on Saturday.
Among the victims was Poland’s central bank governor, the country’s army chief and a number of politicians. Mr. Kaczynski’s wife, Maria, also died.
They had been on their way to attend the 70th. anniversary of the Katyn massacre in which thousands of Poles were shot by Soviet forces.
The bodies of Mr. Kaczynski and his wife are now lying state (see photo).
The book of condolence in Belfast will remain open until the President’s funeral on Sunday.
