Punk Rock impresario McLaren dies

Malcolm McLaren, who was manager of the punk rock group the Sex Pistols has died. He was 64.

Mr. McLaren had been suffering from cancer and passed away in Switzerland.

In 1975 McLaren was running his clothes store on London’s King’s Road when his assistant invited a young man with green hair, who was standing outside the premises, to meet his boss.

The young man was John Lydon. He was to become Johnny Rotten and a fledgling band called The Strand was to be renamed The Sex Pistols. The rest, as they say, is history!

Two years later the band cemented their anti-establishment credentials, and love of controversy, when they released their single God Save the Queen at the height of Queen’s Silver Jubilee celebrations.

A promotional performance on a boat close the Houses of Parliament was raided by the police and McLaren was arrested.

After the Pistols split-up McLaren went on to forge a solo music career with mixed success.

He had a son, Joseph Corre, with former partner Vivienne Westwood, the designer.

It is understood Mr. McLaren’s body will be brought back to London for burial.
