The death has taken place of James Mason who became Britain’s oldest bridegroom when he married three years ago. He was 96.
Mr. Mason married Peggy when she was 83 and he was 93 on St. Valentine’s Day in 2007.
The couple had met at a day centre and Peggy had said it was ‘love at first sight’.
He was a former mayor of Torbay and had spent 54 years working at the town’s Imperial Hotel.
Mr. Mason had suffered a stroke in the weeks following his marriage.
His widow said: “The pearly gates would have opened wide for him and his halo will be shining.”
