Remains of missing South Armagh man believed found

Remains found buried in County Monaghan are believed to be those of South Armagh man Charlie Armstrong who disappeared 29 years ago.

Mr. Armstrong, who was 57, went missing after leaving home on August 15, 1981 to attend Mass in Crossmaglen.

The father-of-five became one of the Disappeared — people who had been abducted and killed by the IRA, then buried in secret graves. The IRA have never admitted any involvement in the disappearance.

In 2008 a search operation was launched in an area of County Monaghan after a map was handed over to officials. However, nothing was found.

It is understood the the remains discovered on Thursday (July 29) were unearthed at a spot very close to the scene of the 2008 excavations.

DNA tests will now be carried out on the remains. It is expected to be some time before the results will be made known.
