Republic hopes cemetery will be a tourist attraction

The Republic’s government hopes a new museum at the national cemetery in Dublin will help turn the necropolis into a tourist attraction.

The museum has been opened at Glasnevin Cemetery in the north of the city.

Officially opening the £9m complex, Irish prime minister Brian Cowan said it would establish Glasnevin alongside famous cemeteries in the world such as Pére-Lachaise in Paris and Arlington in the United States.

Mr. Cowan said walking through Glasnevin “is like walking through Irish history”.

Famous figures who are buried there include Daniel O’Connell, Eamon de Valera, Michael Collins and Brendan Behan.

The museum features a City of the Dead exhibition, which charts the history of the graves.
