Ranger David Dalzell, who died while serving in Afghanistan, was buried with full military honours in his home town of Bangor.
Ranger Dalzell died in what the Ministry of Defence described as an “operational accident”.
The 20-year-old man had been serving with the 1st. Battalion, The Royal Irish Regiment in Helmand Province.
His Funeral Service took place in Hamilton Road Presbyterian Church.
Among the hundreds of mourners was the Secretary of State Owen Patterson and First Minister Peter Robinson.
The Service included a number of personal tributes in which Ranger Dalzell’s many qualities were recalled.
The Reverend David Leach told the mourners: “We know that from all the tributes that have been paid to David, in his short military career, he never shirked battle, he was a willing soldier.
“He was serving a cause that continues to seek to bring peace and reconciliation in a country torn apart by hostility.”
Veteran soldiers formed a guard of honour outside the church as Ranger Dalzell’s flag-draped coffin left for burial with full military honours in the town’s Clandeboye Cemetery.
