The death has taken place of Elizabeth Taylor who was one of the great movie stars of her age. She was 79.
Dame Elizabeth won two Oscars during her career, for Butterfield 8 (1960) and Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf? (1967), and was nominated a number of times.
She shot to fame as a child actress in National Velvet (1944).
At the height of her career she was regarded as one of the world’s most beautiful women.
She was married a total of eight times – twice to the actor Richard Burton.
Her other husbands were: Conrad Hilton, Michael Wilding, Michael Todd, Eddie Fisher, John Warner and Larry Fortensky.
The actress was a well known campaigner for her Aids charity which she established following the death of her friend, the actor Rock Hudson.
Dame Elizabeth had battled health problems in recent years, including a near fatal bout of pneumonia in the 1990s and a benign brain tumour towards the end of the decade.
It is understood Dame Elizabeth was being treated for congestive heart failure when she died in Los Angeles.
