SECURITY measures have had to be taken to protect the grave of former DJ and TV presenter Sir Jimmy Savile amid fears that thieves could be tempted to target his final resting place.
Sir Jimmy was laid to rest in a cemetery in Scarborough on November 10.
His gold-coloured coffin had been placed in the grave at an angle of 45 degrees after Sir Jimmy had left instructions that he wanted “to see the sea” from his final resting place.
However, it is now reported that security measures have had to be taken.
According to reports fears over the security of the grave were raised after incorrect suggestions in the media that some of Sir Jimmy’s gold jewellery may have been placed in the coffin.
But a spokesman for the funeral directors involved made it clear that nothing of value has been placed in the grave.
There was also a fear that thieves may have believed that the coffin used contained elements of real gold in its construction, but the funeral directors said the metal casket had only been sprayed a gold colour.
It has now been decided that the coffin will be encased in concrete in order to ensure that it cannot be disturbed.
A spokesman said the security measures were taken following consultation with Sir Jimmy’s family.
