SIXTIES pop star Trevor Ward-Davies, better known as Dozy from the group Dave Dee, Dozy, Beaky, Mick and Tich, has passed away at the age of 70.
Ward-Davies, who played bass guitar, was the founding member of the group in Salisbury in 1961. With his four friends, David Harman, John Dymond, Michael Wilson and Ian Amey, they were originally called Dave Dee and the Bostons but later decided to call themselves Dave Dee, Dozy, Beaky, Mick and Tich based on their nicknames.
Their first chart success came in 1965 with You Make It Move and it was quickly followed by a string of hits which established the lads as one of the top groups of the sixties. Their best-known hits of this period included Hold Tight! (see below), Bend It! (see below) and Legend of Xanadu (see below), which was one of two singles to sell more than one million copies for the outfit.
During the period between 1965 and 1970 the group spent more weeks in the UK singles charts than The Kinks or The Who.
Tributes to Ward-Davies were led by his friend and former band member, Ian Amey (Tich). He said: “He was very good fun to be with, a very good friend for many, many years and he will be terribly missed.”
Mr. Amy added: “It was his band. It all started off with Dozy before it ever got to Dave Dee, Dozy, Beaky, Mick and Tich. He was a great guy and will be sadly missed.”
Apart from Mr. Amy, the other surviving members of the group are John Dymond (Becky) and Michael Wilson (Mick). Dave Dee, the lead singer David Harman, passed away in 2009, aged 65.
Mr. Ward-Davies passed away in hospital following a short illness.
