THERE was a slight rise in the number of deaths recorded in Northern Ireland during the third quarter of 2013.
According to provisional figures released in the Registrar General’s Quarterly Report, there were 3,462 deaths reported during the period July to September. The figure represents 13 more deaths than during the same period in 2012.
More females than males passed away during the quarter — 1,743 compared with 1,719.
Cancer remains the main killer with the disease being blamed for 1,093 deaths during the quarter — 107 more than during the corresponding period in the previous year.
Other causes of death recorded were heart disease (426 deaths) and respiratory disease (441).
There were four fewer deaths recorded as suicide during the third quarter with a total of 67 being reported compared with 71 the previous year. There was also a slight fall in the number of deaths being linked to the use of alcohol and drugs. A total of 52 alcohol-related deaths were recorded (66 in 2012) while drugs were linked to 28 deaths, compared with 39 during the third quarter of 2012.
Slight falls were also recorded in deaths which were linked to hospital infections such as MRSA and Clostridium Difficile. In the period July to September 2013, three deaths were linked to MRSA, compared with 7 the previous year, while 9 deaths were linked to Clostridium Difficile — six fewer than in the previous year.
The total number of deaths recorded until the end of September 2013 is already up on the same period in 2012 — 11,409 compared with 11,085.
