TRIBUTES have been paid to the soul singer and musician Jimmy Castor, who has passed away at the age of 71.
Mr. Castor had his first hit in the mid-1950s when his song I Promise to Remember was covered by Frankie Lymon and the Teenagers.
He had a close association with the band, having filled-in for Lymon on occasions.
Mr. Castor, who was also a soul saxophonist, enjoyed success with his own band, Jimmy Castor Bunch, in the 60s and 70s with songs including Troglodyte (Cave Man), see below, and It’s Just Begun.
He went on to be a major influence with many hip hop artists. It’s thought his work has been sampled more than 3,000 times by hip hop performers.
His number I Just Wanna Stop was used by Kanye West on his track We Don’t Care.
Others who have riffed and sampled Mr. Castor’s work include Grandmaster Flash, Ice Cube and Mos Def.
He passed away at a hospital in Las Vegas only weeks after undergoing major heart surgery.
