The soul singer Teddy Pendergrass has passed away in Philadelphia.
Pendergrass, who was 59, was the first black male singer to record five consecutive multi-platinum albums in the United States.
The family said the singer had recently undergone surgery for colon cancer but had experienced difficulties.
Before going solo in the mid-70s, Teddy Pendergrass had early success with Harold Melvin and the Blue Notes. The hits included If You Don’t Know Me By Now.
He was paralysed from the waist down as a result of a road accident in 1982, and three years later used a wheelchair when he appeared at the Live Aid concert in Philadelphia.
His son, Teddy Pendergrass II, said his father would “Live on through his music”.
