South Down villagers mourn victims

The funerals have taken place in South Down of two men killed in weekend road accidents.

People in the villages of Kilcoo and Hilltown have been in mourning since the separate accidents.

Kilcoo man Peter Francis Devlin, who was 63, died on Saturday afternoon when the car he was travelling in was involved in a collision with a lorry on the main Belfast to Downpatrick Road.

On Saturday evening Hilltown man Martin Walls, who was 45, died after being struck by a car as he walked along the Dublin Road at Kilcoo.

Both funerals took place on Wednesday (March 31).

The first funeral was in Kilcoo of father-of-six Mr. Devlin. Requiem Mass was held at 12 noon in St. Malachy’s Church. He was buried in the adjoining cemetery.

In nearby Hilltown the funeral for Mr. Walls got underway at 1.30 p.m. with Requiem Mass taking place at 2.30 p.m. in St. John’s Church, Ballymaghery. He was buried in the adjoining cemetery.
