Hundreds of members of the Polish community in Northern Ireland have attended a memorial service at Stormont for their President, Lech Kaczynski, who was killed in an air crash.
The service was held on Saturday afternoon (April 17) in the Great Hall at Parliament Buildings.
The Assembly had invited members of the public to attend. The Speaker, Willie Hay, said it had been decided to hold the memorial service “as a mark of respect to our Polish neighbours and friends”.
Mr. Kacynski died along with 95 other people when their plane crashed as it attempted to land in thick fog at Smolensk’s airport in Russia on Saturday.
Among the victims was Poland’s central bank governor, the country’s army chief and a number of politicians. Mr. Kaczynski’s wife, Maria, also died.
They had been on their way to attend the 70th. anniversary of the Katyn massacre in which thousands of Poles were shot by Soviet forces.
A State Funeral for President Kaczynski will take place on Sunday (April 18).
