THE DEATH has taken place of Stan Barstow who was among a generation of working-class writers whose work had a major impact on the Britain’s literary scene of the 1950s and 1960s.
The Yorkshireman and his comtemporaries, including Alan Sillitoe, Keith Waterhouse and John Braine, produced gritty stories which were to become known as kitchen sink dramas.
Mr. Barstow, who was 83, had his first literary success in 1960 with the publication of A Kind Of Loving which portrayed an unhappy marriage.
A film based on the novel was made in 1962 and starred Alan Bates and June Ritchie (see below).
The success of the novel enabled Mr. Barstow to become a full-time writer.
He wrote a sequel, The Watchers On The Shore, which came out in 1966, with a third novel in the series, The Right True End, in 1976.
His other works included Ask Me Tomorrow (1962), A Raging Calm (1968), A Season With Eros (1971), A Brother’s Tale (1980) and Next Of Kin (1991).
