Titanic actress passes away

Tributes have been paid to actress Gloria Stuart who has died aged 100.

Ms. Stuart earned an Oscar nomination for best supporting actress for her role in the blockbuster film Titanic (1997).

Her involvement in the film was remarkable for the fact that it came after almost fifty years of being in retirement.

Ms. Stuart had started her career in the 1930s but had been frustrated at the studios keeping her in B movie roles. She then had a break from acting and returned to make several low-key movies in the 1940s but after that did very little work aside from occasional minor roles on stage and television.

She always put her failure to make her mark in Hollywood on the fact that she had signed for the wrong studio. Faced with offers from Paramount and Universal, she signed for the latter because of the higher offer. But she did not realise that Paramount was, at that time, the superior studio.

Her appearance in Titanic led to roles in several other films. These included The Love Letter (1999) and Land of Plenty (2004).
