Tributes have been paid to Catherine Walker the top fashion designer who has died aged 65.
Catherine Walker’s fashion business was born out of tragedy. She had moved from France to live in London after marrying solicitor John Walker, but he died in an accident in 1975 leaving Catherine with two baby girls.
She began her fashion business in rather modest form, selling clothes from a basket in the King’s Road area of Chelsea while studying fashion in the evenings.
A base for the business was established in Chelsea in 1977.
In the 1990s Princess Diana became a client. Catherine went on to produce many of the sensational dresses associated with the Princess. Indeed, Diana was buried in one of the Walker designed dresses.
The client list for the business included royalty and successful businesswomen.
Catherine Walker had been suffering from cancer. She was a Founder Sponsor of the charity Breast Cancer Haven.
