Tributes are paid to Bill Smyth

Tributes have been paid to veteran broadcaster Bill Smyth who had died.

Mr. Smyth had one of the most distinctive voices in Northern Ireland broadcasting.

He began his broadcasting career as a continuity presenter and news reader with Ulster Television in the late 1970s.

After his time in television, Bill moved to Downtown Radio where his great skills were employed on a number of shows, but he will be particularly remembered as presenter of the Sunday Request Show.

He was an extremely accomplished presenter and had a large following of fans during his time at the station.

Mr. Smyth later worked for a number of other radio stations including Citybeat and U105.

In latter years Mr. Smyth had also worked as a sports contributor, specialising in football and cricket.

Many tributes have been paid.

Among those to pay tribute was the U105 presenter Ivan Martin.

He said: “Bill had a distinctive voice, one of the most distinctive in broadcasting here.

“When Bill spoke he did so with such authority it didn’t matter what he was saying”.

Another tribute was posted on the Crusaders Football Club website to which  Mr. Smyth had been a contributor: “Bill contributed greatly to the success of the club website.”

The tribute continued: “He was a very willing person who added character to the Irish League scene. Bill was a regular visitor to Seaview and will be sadly missed.”

The Funeral took place on Saturday (January 29).
