TRIBUTES have been paid to the former footballer Brian Greenhoff who has passed away at the age of 60.
The centre-half had played for Manchester United, Leeds United and England during a successful career which included an FA Cup win.
Born in Barnsley, Mr. Greenhoff joined Manchester United as a youth player in 1968 and was a member of the team that won the old second division title in 1975. A year later he was joined at United by his older brother Jimmy. They both played on the F.A. Cup winning side in 1977 when United defeated Liverpool 2-1.
He played 271 games during his time at United and scored 17 goals before being transferred to Leeds United in 1979. However, after Leeds were relegated in 1982 he was given a free transfer and eventually ended his career as player-coach at Rochdale where his brother Jimmy was player-manager.
His international career had included four appearances for the England Under-23 side before making his debut with the senior squad in 1976. He eventually earned 18 international caps.
Mr. Greenhoff’s autobiography Greenhoff! was published in recent months and had received good reviews.
News of his passing was released in a statement from the Greenhoff family. The statement had included the following tribute: “Brian was a proud and much loved brother, husband of Maureen, father of Paul, Brian and Peter, grandfather to Jack, James and Harry and will be sorely missed by his family, who he made very proud in his distinguished life and career.”
