TRIBUTES have been paid to former footballer Sandy Jardine who has passed away at the age of 65.
Mr. Jardine had spent most of his career at Glasgow Rangers as well as playing 38 times for the Scotland team. The full-back joined the side in 1965 and went on to make more than 600 appearances for the club. He was a member of the team which went on to win the European Cup Winners’ Cup in 1972.
During his time at Ibrox the club won three top-flight titles, five Scottish Cups and five Scottish League Cups. He was named Scotland’s Player of the Year on two occasions — once during the mid-1970s and again in the 1985-86 season, at the age of 37, when he was with Hearts. He had joined the club in 1982 and jointly managed the side, along with another former Rangers player Alex MacDonald, from 1986 to 1988.
His international career was played out over a nine-year period and included World Cup campaigns in 1974 and 1978. He also captained the side on nine occasions.
After finally retiring as a player, he returned to work on the staff at Rangers for many years.
Mr. Jardine passed away 18 months after being diagnosed with cancer. He is survived by his wife Shona and children Steven and Nicola.
The many tributes were led by the Rangers club. In a statement the team’s manager Ally McCoist said: “Sandy was respected not only by Rangers fans but also the wider football community. He is a hugh loss to the game.”
Mr. McCoist added: “He was a truly remarkable human being. His achievements both on and off the pitch are second to none and I was honoured to regard him as a friend.”
Former Rangers team-mate Sir Alex Ferguson also paid tribute. The former Manchester United manager said: “Sandy was a noble and courageous man. The respect he is held in at Rangers is immense. He was one of the greatest players ever to wear the jersey.”
