Many tributes have been paid to actress Rue McClanahan, one of the stars of the TV show The Golden Girls, who has died aged 76.

Ms. McClanahan played the feisty Blanche Devereaux in the popular series.

Her manager said Ms. McClanahan passed away after suffering a stroke. She had suffered heart problems and underwent by-pass surgery last year.

Ms. McClanahan had enjoyed a varied career in TV and stage productions and had received several awards.

Among those to pay tribute was Betty White, the last surviving member of The Golden Girls cast.

Ms. White, who is 88, said: “Rue was a dear friend, I treasured our relationship and her passing hurts more than I ever thought it would”.

Rue McClanahan had been married six times. Her memoir was published in 2007 under the title My First Five Husbands ... And The Ones Who Got Away.
