Tributes are paid to pioneering chocolate maker

TRIBUTES have been paid to pioneering chocolate maker Mott Green who recently passed away following an accident. He was 47.

The American, who was born David Friedman, founded the environmentally and ethically-sound Grenada Chocolate Company. He became known as Mott (which was the distinctive way residents on the Caribbean island pronounced his nickname, Moth) and added Green because of his environmentally-friendly ethos.

After dropping out of university, the young Friedman had spend most of his 20s squatting with like-minded activists in Philadelphia before finding his way to Grenada. His father, who was a doctor, had taken his family to the island during regular teaching assignments.

It was while living in a bamboo hut he had built in the jungle that Mott hit upon the idea of developing a chocolate making operation which would benefit local people.

He and his partners endeavoured from the outset to ensure the operation was as environmentally-friendly as possible. To this end, the locally-grown organic cocoa beans are dried in the sun before being transferred to a production unit which is solar powered (see below).

The rich dark chocolate produced by the company does not come cheap, but the operation provides much-needed employment as well as being able to distribute higher returns to the local cocoa farmers. The chocolate is distributed in the United States and Europe (see below).

It was while carrying out work on a solar-powered refrigeration unit at the small factory that Mr. Green was electrocuted.
