Tributes have been paid to the young police officer who died when a booby-trap bomb went off under his car in Omagh.
The officer who died has been named as Ronan Kerr who was 25 and had been in the PSNI since May 2010.
Constable Kerr died when the device exploded outside his home in the Highfield Close area of Omagh.
Chief Constable Matt Baggott paid tribute to the young officer.
He said Constable Kerr had been a “modern-day hero” and he continued: “I can assure his family and his colleagues and the wider community that we will do everything in our power to not only bring to justice those who committed this act but to serve all the community impartially and professionally, as Ronan had done in the exemplary service he had provided in this district.”
First Minister Peter Robinson said Constable Kerr had been a young man who had bravely entered the police service, recognising that he was putting his life on the line.
Deputy First Minister Martin McGuinness hit out at those responsible for the murder, accusing them of having “betrayed the community”.
He continued: “In joining the police service this young man sought to protect and serve the community and to be part of defining a better future for all of us.”
