RICHARD ‘Kip’ Carpenter, who created the children’s TV series Catweazle, has died aged 78.
Mr. Carpenter had worked as an actor before turning to a successful career in writing. He not only created Catweazle but wrote all 26 episodes of the cult series which featured a time-travelling wizard.
The series, which first aired in the 1970s, won him international recognition along with a Writers’ Guild award. The main character was played by Geoffrey Bayldon (see below).
Mr. Carpenter went on to create other successful television series. In the 1980s he wrote the Robin of Sherwood series which starred Michael Praed and Jason Connery.
After establishing, with partners, the production company Gatearn, Mr. Carpenter co-created the Dick Turpin series and Smuggler.
His TV writing credits also included The Adventures of Black Beauty, The Famous Five and The Borrowers. He also produced a number of novelisations of his TV shows.
Mr. Carpenter was honoured with a Children’s Bafta in 2000.
