TRIBUTES have been paid to the actor Charles Napier who has died aged 75.
The former US paratrooper enjoyed a long and varied career as a character actor in films and television.
But his involvement in acting came about by accident as he had intended to develop a career as a sports coach. In 1970 he decided to accompany a girlfriend who had been called for an audition for a role in the film Cherry, Harry and Raquel.
The director Russ Meyer immediately signed him up for the film and his career had begun.
Meyer was to cast him again in Beyond The Valley Of The Dolls (1970), The Seven Minutes (1971) and in Supervixens (1975).
He was also kept busy making appearances on television shows, including Star Trak, The Rockford Files, and Starsky and Hutch.
His later film credits included The Blues Brothers (1980), Rambo: First Blood Part II (1985), The Silence Of The Lambs (1991), Philadelphia (1993) and both Austin Powers movies.
In recent years he had concentrated most of his efforts in carrying out voice-over work for films.
