TRIBUTES have been paid to the actor Nicol Williamson who has passed away aged 75.
The Scotsman had enjoyed a successful career on both the stage and screen.
After attending the Birmingham School of Speech and Drama, Mr. Williamson was soon producing electrifying performances on the stage. One of these was as Hamlet in Tony Richardson’s production in London’s Roundhouse.
The production, which also starred Anthony Hopkins, transferred to New York.
He received his first nomination for a Tony Award in 1966 for Inadmissible Evidence.
Among the many people to admire his work was the playwright John Osborne, who said Mr. Williamson was “the greatest actor since Marlon Brando”.
He appeared in a number of TV films of Shakespeare’s work including Macbeth (1983), see below.
His early film work included The Bofors Gun (1968) and The Jerusalem File (1972).
Later films included Excalibur (1981), in which he played Merlin, and The Exorcist III (1990).
Mr. Williamson passed away in Amsterdam where he had been living. He had been suffering from cancer.
