Tributes have been paid to the artist Lucian Freud who has died aged 88.
Mr. Freud was a realist painter whose work has commanded huge prices for many years.
He was particularly associated with his paintings of nudes.
While at his death he was regarded as Britain’s most distinguished artist his work from the late 1950s until the 1980s was almost marginalised by the art world.
But he went on to be recognised as one of the greatest painters. He was immensely influential.
One of his paintings, Benefits Supervisor Sleeping, was sold in 2008 for £17m, a record price for the work of a living artist.
Mr. Freud worked in two studios in London and would divide most of his time between the buildings.
He rarely gave interviews and did not allow his photograph to be taken very often. However, he did paint a large number of self-portraits over the years (see above).
Mr. Freud was born in Berlin and was the grandson of the psycho-analyst Sigmund Freud.
He fled with his jewish family to Britain in 1933 when he was aged 10. His brother was Clement, who became a politician.
Tributes have been paid with many people saying he had redefined British art.
When the death was announced his favourite restaurant placed a candle and a black cloth at his usual table in his honour.
