TRIBUTES have been paid to the author Reginald Hill who has died aged 75.
The former college lecturer will be best remembered for his books featuring the detectives Dalziel and Pascoe.
He had introduced the pair in his first published book, A Clubbable Woman, which came out in 1970.
Mr. Hill then developed the characters further in subsequent novels.
His creations were brought to TV screens by the BBC who produced 12 series with Warren Clarke playing the bluff northern detective superintendent Andrew Dalziel and Colin Buchanan as sergeant Peter Pascoe.
Mr. Hill wrote 24 books which featured his detective duo, but he also published other crime fiction — some of these books originally appeared under the names Dick Morland, Patrick Ruell and Charles Underhill.
In 1995 he won the Crime Writers’ Association Cartier Diamond Dagger for his lifetime contribution to crime writing.
Among the tributes to Mr. Hill was one from the writer Ian Rankin who twitted: “A lovely man, fine writer, great wit. Great intelligence, humour and plotting; Falstaffian main character; literary sensibility — all found in Reginald Hill’s Dalziel books.”
