Tributes are paid to top wine merchant

TRIBUTES have been paid to top wine merchant Patrick Sandeman who passed away following a skydiving accident in England. He was 53.

Mr. Sandeman, who was a highly experienced skydiver, died in a collision involving another enthusiast.

The incident happened above an airfield in Peterborough. The other skydiver, a 28-year-old Frenchman, was seriously injured in the accident.

Mr. Sandeman, who was a scion of the Sandeman family of port and sherry fame, was regarded as one of the country’s top wine merchants. He was a partner in Lea & Sandeman, which is based in London.

Many tributes have been paid to him from the world of wine.

Among those to pay tribute was the wine critic Jancis Robinson. She said: “Charles Sandeman was one of the most appealing and entertaining characters in the wine business. He was extremely talented in his ability to hand-pick great wines from, particularly, Italy. He occupied a unique place in the world of wine.”

He is survived by his wife and three children.
