Tributes are paid to war veteran Bernard Jordan

WORLD War Two veteran Bernard Jordan, who hit the headlines last year when he disappeared from his care home to attend the 70th anniversary D-Day commemorations, has passed away at the age of 90.

Mr. Jordan’s disappearance from the home in Hove last June had sparked a police search. But hours later he was found safe and well in France. He had hidden his medals under his coat and had travelled alone to the commemorations.

The former Royal Navy officer had decided to make his own way to Normandy after a bid to get him on an accredited tour with the Royal British Legion failed because it had been made too late.

Mr. Jordan, who was a former mayor of Hove, had told reporters that he had gone to Normandy because “My thoughts were with my mates who had been killed. I wanted to pay my respects.”

A month after returning from his trip, Mr. Jordan was honoured by the local council for his past services to the area when he was made an honorary Alderman of Brighton and Hove.

Staff at The Pines Care Home in Hove said they would miss Mr. Jordan very much.

Tributes were led by the Mayor of Brighton, Brian Fitch, who said his friend had been a “living legend”.

Councillor Fitch added: “I will remember Bernie as a hard-working politician, as a great mayor of the city, and as someone who helped people”.
