Chris Haney, who was the co-creator of the board game Trivial Pursuit has died. He was 59.
Mr. Haney, who was known as ‘Horn’, created the general knowledge game along with fellow Canadian, Scott Abbott. They had met in the 1970s when Haney was working as a photojournalist for the Montreal Gazette, and Abbott was a reporter for Canadian Press.
The pair came up with the idea for their game while playing Scrabble in a bar in 1975. But it was not until the beginning of the 80s that the first version of the game, which was originally to be known as Six Thousand Questions, was available for sale.
This milestone was only reached after $75,000 was raised from friends and acquaintances.
Sales were slow at first, but gradually things picked up and eventually the board game became a success with 88 million sets already sold worldwide.
In 2008 Haney and Abbott sold the rights to the Hasbro company for $80 million.
Mr. Haney is survived by his wife and three children.
