Unmarked graves of children found in Dublin

The unmarked graves of 40 children have been found in a Dublin cemetery.

The children had died during the mid-1930s at a residential home for unmarried Protestant women.

Researcher Niall Meehan made the discovery while studying records at Mount Jerome Cemetery.

Mr. Meehan established that between 1935 and 1936 infants who died at the Bethany Home in Rathgar were buried in and around common graves in the cemetery.

The home, which was in Orwell Road, was run by independent trustees but was regulated by the State. It closed in 1972.

Mr. Meehan has established the identities of all 40 babies.

Surviving residents of the home have now established a pressure group. They have called for a monument to be established  to remember the babies.
