THE veteran actor Paul Rogers has passed away at the age of 96.
In a long and distinguished career, Mr. Rogers had enjoyed success on stage and screen. He had first appeared on stage in the late 1930s and by the 1950s was playing some of the great Shakespearean roles at the Old Vic in London — including critically acclaimed performances as Falstaff, Henry IV and King Lear.
He later moved to the Royal Shakespeare Company, working closely with Peter Hall and winning a Tony award for best actor in 1967 for his performance as Max in the RSC’s production of Harold Pinter’s Homecoming.
Other notable roles included playing the aging actor in Ronald Harwood’s The Dresser. He also appeared in Anthony Shaffer’s Sleuth when the production moved from London to Broadway.
Mr. Rogers also appeared regularly on television as well as in films. His television credits include Porterhouse Blue, Lovejoy and Kavanagh QC.
His film appearances included Our Man In Havana (1959), Billy Budd (1962) and Shoes Of A Fisherman (1968).
Mr. Rogers continued to work until he was well into his eighties. In a statement his family said he was never without work “unless by choice”, adding that this was “probably the greatest accolade for any performer”.
