WAR photographer Horst Faas, who won two Pulitzers Prizes for his work, has passed away. He was 79.
Mr. Faas, who was German-born, joined the Associated Press in the late 1950s and was soon covering conflict in Zaire and Algeria.
He went on to become AP’s photo chief in Vietnam where he was to produce some of his best work — winning the first of his Pulitzers in 1965.
But his determination to cover the action resulted in him being seriously injured during the conflict in 1967. But he returned to work in the country and remained in post until 1970.
During time in Siagon Mr. Faas trained many young Vietnamese photographers, many of whom went on to capture some of the conflict’s defining images.
Among those to pay tribute to Mr. Faas was Santiago Lyon, AP’s global head of photography.
He said: “Horst Faas was a giant in the world of photojournalism whose extraordinary commitment to telling difficult stories was unique and remarkable.”
