Former local broadcaster Margaret Cunningham has passed away. She was 66.
Ms. Cunningham began her broadcasting career in the 1970s with Ulster Television where she was involved in a number of programmes including the arts show Spectrum.
She then moved to Downtown Radio where she spent many years as a producer/presenter.
Among the first shows she presented for the station was one dealing with listeners’ problems.
But she will be particularly remembered for her widely acclaimed travel show Take A Break which ran on the station for more than 20 years.
Ms. Cunningham set high production standards for the show but she was always willing to encourage young up-and-coming broadcasters to become contributors.
She was always looking at ways of enhancing the content and the appeal of the show and towards the end of its long run recruited the travel writer John Carter to become involved.
When the travel show ended, Ms. Cunningham produced a number of shows on environmental issues.
In recent years she had worked as a counsellor after studying at Queen’s University as a mature student.
She his survived by her husband Jim McCarroll.
