A LIVE webcam feed has been established at the grave of the artist Andy Warhol to mark what would have been his 85th. birthday.
Mr. Warhol, who passed away aged 58 in 1987, was famous for his iconic pop-art creations
Although he had created much of his work in New York, at his studio known as The Factory, the artist was buried in his home city of Pittsburgh close to the grave of his parents, Andrej and Julia Warhola in The St. John The Baptist Byzantine Catholic Cemetery.
His simple headstone, which bears his name along with the dates of his birth and death, could have been very different if an earlier expressed wish by the artist had been followed. Mr. Warhol had once said: “I always thought I’d like my tombstone to be blank. No epitaph and no name. Well, actually, I’d like it to say ‘Figment’.”
The webcam feed (see below) has been established by the Warhol Museum in Pittsburgh. It came online on Monday (August 6), the day on which he would have been 85.
The museum has named the project Figment and has established the feed in conjunction with EarthCam who have also established a webcam at The St. John Chrysostom Byzantine Catholice Church in Pittsburgh where Mr. Warhol was Baptised (see below). A facility to send flowers to the grave has also been set up by EarthCam.
Every year thousands of fans visit Mr. Warhol’s grave.
The director of the Warhol Museum, Eric Shiner, said he believed the artist would be delighted by the online project. He said: “I believe this is a fantastic way to put Andy on the air 24/7 and plug in to our global audience. We believe that this will give Andy the pleasure of knowing that he is still plugged in and turned on more than 25 years after his death”.
