Well known actor passes away

The actor Lionel Jeffries has passed away. He was 83.

His career spanned work in stage, screen and television. He had some success as a film director. He wrote and directed The Railway Children.

Born in London’s east end in 1926, Jeffries served in Burma during the Second World War. He was later to blame the jungle conditions for the premature loss of his hair.

But the bald pate was to help in landing some of his acting roles. In the film Chitty Chitty Bang Bang he played Dick Van Dyke’s father despite being  younger than the US actor.

Mr. Jeffries also appeared in many of the great British comedy films, including    Two Way Stretch.

His television credits included the children’s show Woof!

Mr. Jeffries passed away in a nursing home in Dorset.
