Wolves football legend Peter Broadbent passes away

THE death has taken place of former footballer Peter Broadbent who was one of Wolverhampton Wanderers’ top players in 1950s and early 1960s. He was 80.

Mr. Broadbent had turned professional at 17 while playing for the then Second Division side Brentford. His playing flair soon brought him to the attention of Wolves who paid £10,000 for him in 1951. His new club had a reputation for playing a long-ball game, but such were Mr. Broadbent’s skills that he was given more time on the ball, especially once the side had secured a lead.

He was soon regarded as a kingpin of the Wolves attack, creating many goal-scoring opportunities and helping the side to the First Division championship in 1953-54, 1957-58 and 1958-59.

The highlight of his time at Wolves was to be winning the F.A. Cup in 1960 against Blackburn Rovers (see below). He remained with Wolves until 1964, making almost 500 appearances for the side during his 13 years at the club and scoring 145 goals.

Mr. Broadbent did have a short playing career with England but he was never able to produce the flair at international level that was on display with Wolves. He final cap was in 1960 for a match against Scotland.

After leaving Wolves in 1964, he went on to play for several clubs including Aston Villa and Stockport County before retiring in 1971.

Mr. Broadbent passed away after suffering from Alzheimer’s disease. He is survived by his wife Shirley and children Gary and Debbie.
