Woman who rescued the diary of Anne Frank

The woman who kept Anne Frank’s diary from falling into the hands of the Nazis has died.

Miep Gies, who was aged 100, died in the Netherlands.

She was a member of a group of people which had helped hide the Frank Family and their friends in Amsterdam for two years during the war.

After the families were discovered by the Nazis, Miep Gies found the diary and other papers and kept them safe.

Only Otto Frank survived to return to Amsterdam where Mrs. Gies handed over his daughter’s diary, which was subsequently published across the world.

However, she always played down her role in the story. Speaking on her 100th. birthday, Mrs. Gies said many others had done more to protect Jews in the Netherlands.
