Oldest man in Ireland passes away

The death has taken place of Paddy Gleeson who was Ireland’s oldest man. He was 106.

Mr. Gleeson was from O’Callaghans Mills in County Clare.

He proudly claimed to have voted in every election held since the formation of the Republic of Ireland. 

Mr. Gleeson was a witness to history. As a young man he attended the funerals of the Scariff Martyrs — four men murdered in County Clare in 1920 during the war of independence,

In recent years he had attended the annual commemoration ceremony for the Martyrs.

His memories were recorded by an oral history project in Clare.

He was a lifelong bachelor and teetotaller.

Mr. Geeson had received a Presidential Medal every year since his 100th. birthday.
